Job-Oriented Specialized B.Sc. (Hons.) Courses

• Overview
Jadavpur University, Kolkata awards the degree for the B.Sc Honours programme at J. D. Birla Institute (Departments of Sciences). These are all girls departments that are located at the main campus. With a change in attitude towards women's education and with increasing importance placed on job-oriented education, the field of applied sciences is considered essential today. All the B.Sc courses offered by the institute are based on applied sciences and are geared to meet the emerging needs and challenges of contemporary society as they respond well to the evolving global standards. The present curricula and syllabi have been revised and updated in accordance with UGC (University Grant Commission) guidelines. Mandatory one month internship training in the final year of study is the USP of these courses. The courses offer each student with ample opportunities to assess their abilities, aptitudes and interest and introduces them to a world of jobs and careers.

• Duration
The length of the course is 3 years (6 semesters) with 6-8 subject papers covered in each semester. Students have to attend about 15-17 weeks of classes per semester.

• Timing
Classes are scheduled in the morning from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. On Saturdays, classes are held from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

• Batch Size & Class Strength
Each Department consists of nearly 130 students with 40-45 students in each of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of study.

• Course Structure and Syllabus

  • Total classes per week: 20 (45 minutes per class)
  • Total weeks per semester: 15 - 17 (approx)
  • Classes per subject per week: 4 (for 50 marks paper) & 6-8 (for 100 marks paper)

• Details of Semesters

  • 1st year: (Semester I & II)
  • 2nd year: (Semester III & IV)
  • 3rd year (Semester V & VI)
  • Total marks per semester = 400
  • Total marks for the entire course = 800

• Degree
The final degree will be awarded by the Jadavpur University.
